A guest manual people can actually use

A guest manual should answer a question quickly. Someone standing beside an unfamiliar hob is unlikely to want the history of the apartment before finding out how to unlock its controls.

Build the manual around the tasks guests need to complete. Keep the arrival guide separate, then organise the information for life inside the property.

Put the essentials first

Start with the Wi-Fi details, the contact for help and where to find the instructions guests are most likely to need. Provide the property's full address in an easy-to-find place in case it is needed when seeking assistance.

Use clear headings such as Heating, Cooking, Ski storage and Departure. A short printed copy is useful if a phone is flat or the internet is unavailable. A digital version is easier to update; keep both versions consistent.

Write instructions for the actual equipment

Photograph the relevant control panel and explain the ordinary guest actions in a few steps. Include how to turn the device off again. Link to the manufacturer's manual for further information instead of copying a long technical booklet into the guest guide.

Do not improvise instructions for faults or repairs. Tell guests when to stop and contact the responsible person. Test the everyday instructions yourself, including the television input, hob controls and heating interface.

Explain how the apartment is shared

Give practical information about ski storage, waste and shared building areas. Explain where things go and any relevant building rules. A precise location is more useful than "please use the bins outside".

Write calmly and briefly. If a rule exists to protect a surface or keep a shared entrance clear, one short explanation helps guests understand it. Avoid a manual filled with threats and hypothetical penalties.

Keep local information current

Offer a few useful starting points: the official resort information page, transport information and where guests can check current opening hours. Link to the original provider for details that change rather than presenting last winter's timetable as current.

Separate personal suggestions from confirmed facts. "A place to consider for lunch" does not promise that it will be open or able to accommodate a particular dietary requirement.

Make departure straightforward

State the checkout time, key return steps and the small practical actions expected. Keep these aligned with the information guests receive before booking. The departure page should not introduce a surprise cleaning programme.

Check the manual whenever equipment, access arrangements or local details change. Add a last updated date so anyone preparing the property can spot an old printed copy.

Try this today: ask someone to find the Wi-Fi, operate the hob and locate the waste instructions using only the manual. Rewrite any answer that takes unnecessary searching.
